Creative Seating

Hay bale seating! So perfect for a rustic outdoor get-together... like maybe a backyard wedding...

My fiance suggested hay bales for our ceremony seating, and it immediately turned on a light bulb. I was picturing the entire lawn covered in these huge, textured blocks draped in brightly hued fabrics. And then I saw this picture, which confirmed that our idea is not completely ridiculous! So what do you think? Creative alternative to the standard rental chair? Or too uncomfortable and prickly to force family and friends to sit upon?

I love the hanging lights! Awesome!! Can we do that in The Rose Garden?

I think it looks really fresh, but you might want to keep in mind whether any of your guests have allergies. It would be awful to have all of your guests sneezing and sniffling throughout the ceremony!!

oooh - I agree with Charlotte - these could whip up a bunch of phlegm for your guests...Nice idea in theory...

I attended the most unique country wedding a few years ago where we sat on hay bails covered in old family quilts! It was very personal which imho makes a wedding. It was fab. I think the pops of color make it a bit more chic. I say its a do!
ps. I have allergies and since the hay was almost completely covered I was fine. It would also be important to completely cover the hay for your guests who are wearing short dresses.

Thanks, everyone, for your great comments! And thanks to Alison, Waxy and Charlotte for pointing out the allergy factor - it is something I had not thought of...

I went to an outdoor wedding years ago where they used bales of hay for seating. No colorful covers though, that would be a nice touch. The ceremony was pretty short, so it wasn't as if we were sitting there long--on to the reception!

Oooo, that could be very cool. But the fabric might have to be thick so no one gets poked!

It looks gorgeous; however, second thing that came to mind was, "Goodness, the fire hazard!" Nothing ruins a wedding faster than a missing bride or everyone in flames; so, is it likely the ambience would still be the same with enclosed lanterns or something similar?

as a wedding coordinator, there are a couple of things that are nice to have on hand for outdoor farm weddings: allergy medicine and bug spray! you can make your own essential-oil bug spray in simple spray bottles so there aren't any ugly cans of OFF in your photos ;)

I love the "upholstered hay bale" idea and just sent it to my mom to put in her files...
